A group of friends start a secret society in this out-of-control thriller from the author of The Telling and The Creeping that examines the all-consuming love of lifelong friendship—and what someone is capable of when they’re afraid of losing it.
Izzie loves nothing more than her three best friends, Viv, Graham, and Harry, and the bond the four of them share. And she’s terrified of their friendship falling apart next year when they go off to college. To bind them together, she decides to create that will belong only to them, a special thing that they’ll always share between the four of them. And so they dream up the Order of IV, a secret society devoted to mischief that rights wrongs and pays back debts. At first, it works like a charm—but when the Order of IV’s escapades get recognition beyond their wildest expectations, other people start wanting in. And soon, what started as a game of friendship is spiraling into something dangerous and beyond their control—and before it’s over, they’ll pay the ultimate sacrifice.

I don’t own anything except for my designs and creativity! All ownership goes to the publisher and author. With that, just right click “download” for the picture if you’re keen on using it. I made four wallpapers, of course, for the four main characters of the book (and to match the title). Enjoy!

“No matter how much you see, there are bottomless seas you don’t.”

In the book, mystery and revenge play a huge role in the plot. There is a death that the characters uncover, a drive to redemption against bullies, and hidden missions that stayssecret within the group. I thought this quote was particularly apt for the setting and tone of the story.

first we were iv 3

“We outshone the star-choked sky. We stared into space and didn’t wonder what was there because we were the universe.”

This quote stood out to me because you can really feel the narrator, Izzie’s, passion for her friends and the adventures they have together. The secret society came from the idea of going against the system, of challenging what is established, and of leaving a legacy of their doing.

“Our secret order, its rebellion, was in my blood.”

This short quote spoke more for itself than any design or typography could have. Rebellion and going against the system is a huge deal in First We Were IV, as the four friends take it upon their hands to right the many wrongs in their town. But in the story, they also find out that the consequences could be worth more than what the actions foretold.

“I want to believe there’s a way to change the world without burning it.”

Another great example of the forms of rebellion that the characters undertake. You could almost think of the group of friends as the outcasts of the main group at school, the leftover people who aren’t worth a second glance. But they are worthy, and they are ready to take the necessary actions to show it in the book.

I’m SO excited for this book omg. And your designs are absolutely gorgeous, I love all the purple, because that’s my favorite color. I especially adore the third wallpaper, so pretty! 🙂

I haven’t heard of this at all, but it sounds sort of like the Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks with less of a focus on feminism? I don’t know. Anyway, thrillers aren’t my thing, but I love your quote illustrations!
